| Vai Capoeira, Inc. is a non-profit organization
whose mission is to provide a space for the development, training
and innovation of Brazilian arts for the enrichment of the surrounding
communities.
In 2001, Angelique Marquand (Instrutora Borboleta) moved
to Phoenix and brought Grupo Capoeira Brasil with her. In
its short history, the group has grown and evolved tremendously.
Under the positive guidance of one of the most amazing Capoeira
masters in the world, Mestre Boneco, Vai Capoeira, Inc. is
a social group that hosts events in addition to teaching/training
Capoeira, a martial art form originating in Brazil. The group
is an artist/athlete community whose work is present throughout
Southern California, Arizona, Texas, New York, Massachusetts,
Missouri, Florida and many other countries worldwide.
Angelique Marquand, functioning as Vai Capoeira, Inc.’s
artistic director, hopes to provide a positive, cultural community
space where Capoeira and Brazilian dance, music and art may
inspire self-expression and creativity. Currently, Grupo Capoeira
Brasil teaches regularly scheduled classes at our academies
in the different states. We host festivals, workshops, international
conventions, and perform throughout the United States.
Since 2001, our group has performed at:
- Thunderbird - The Garvin School of International Management
- Xavier College Preparatory
- Scottsdale Community College
- First Fridays Art Walk in Phoenix
- Cafe Boba in Tempe
- Sonik Magazine's 4th Annual Production
- Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Arts Night
- Phoenix Fitness Expo
- Speakeasy Tour at Brickhouse
We have also conducted workshops at:
- Cambell's Dance Studio
- Mesquite High School
- New School for the Arts
Also, annually, we bring in various capoeira masters and
high level instructors to teach workshops for our students,
as part of our week-long batizado. Throughout the years as
well, we have organized various trips to other schools to
train and participate in their group's activities. This has
included trips to Flagstaff, Los Angeles, San Diego, Tucson,
and even to Hawaii and New York.
